Status and applications of Directional Steel Shot Drilling
October 14, 2024
At the SPE Netherlands Section Monthly Meeting a presentation was given: Status and applications of Directional Steel Shot Drilling by Jan Jette Blangé & Geertjan van Og. The presentation included an overview of the DSSD technology, showed the various development and test achievements and discussed the potential usage and applications.
Directional Steel Shot Drilling (DSSD) is a novel “steel ball” directional drilling technology that offers an innovative solution to drill efficiently through hard rock. Additionally, it’s alternative steering method enables drilling high dogleg laterals and simplifies open hole sidetracks. The technology is developed to improve the well economics of drilling projects in general and especially the novel Advanced Geothermal Systems concepts that focus on low porosity formations will benefit from this technological step forward.
The system is being developed and commercialized by Canopus Drilling Solutions B.V. with support from Well Engineering Partners (WEP) BV. An extensive development, qualification and trial program is being executed to optimize equipment performance and ensure correct service delivery.
