Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a powerful tool for gaining detailed insights into complex fluid behavior — and it’s frequently used to optimize drill bit designs in the energy and drilling sector.
As part of his graduation project at Hanzehogeschool, in collaboration with Well Engineering Partners, Robert Melie applied CFD modeling to explore a novel drill bit concept based on an alternative rock-breaking mechanism.
His work focused on evaluating cuttings transport efficiency, flow velocities, and pressure drops. The insights led to a redesigned bit and the development of practical design guidelines — a great example of how simulation supports innovation in drilling technology.
