WEP – EGEC – Invest-NL report: Potential for geothermal energy in the Netherlands
April 24, 2024
On April 24, Invest-NL, the National Promotional Institute of the Netherlands, released a report to explore opportunities for scaling geothermal energy in the Netherlands. This report, prepared by EGEC and WEP, delves into the geothermal landscape, focusing on key European countries including Germany, Denmark, and France, to provide invaluable insights for the market in the Netherlands.
Overview
The study highlights both the advantages and hurdles associated with geothermal energy, offering learnings for accelerating its development. It emphasises the need to accelerate geothermal energy projects to speed up the thermal transition, which is crucial to meet national renewable energy targets and reduce dependence on traditional fossil fuels.
Geothermal energy is a key player in the sustainable energy transition, offering solutions for heating, cooling and power generation. In the Netherlands, where the focus is on direct heating, the potential for geothermal energy to revolutionise the energy landscape is particularly evident. Dutch geothermal resources have the potential to efficiently heat a significant proportion of residential and industrial properties.
Accelerating geothermal energy
One of the central issues of the report concerns the strategies needed to accelerate the deployment of geothermal energy. It emphasises a multi-faceted approach, highlighting key success factors ranging from policy support and regulatory frameworks to market conditions and stakeholder engagement. Recognising that geothermal energy, while competitive at the end-user level, requires significant support mechanisms to attract investors, the report calls for innovative financial models and risk mitigation measures.
Importantly, the report highlights the need to create an enabling environment for investment in geothermal energy. This implies long-term commitments from policy makers, transparent pricing mechanisms similar to the Danish model, and the creation of reliable heat networks to accommodate sustainable heat producers.
Furthermore, the report emphasises the key role of cooperation, knowledge sharing and strategic alliances in promoting effective geothermal and urban planning. It encourages stakeholders at both European and national level to support geothermal energy through strong political leadership, favourable policy frameworks and financial incentives. By following these recommendations and creating an ecosystem of co-operation, the Netherlands can chart a course towards a sustainable future based on geothermal energy.

JIP 2024: EROI
Well Engineering Partners has supported Delft University of Technology‘s JIP – Joint Interdisciplinary Project Program from its start in 2018. Working together with people with different backgrounds, skills and knowledge is elemental for all engineers. This is also being recognized by more and more companies as JIP grew from 1 company in 2018 to 45 organisations […]

Visit K+S mine
Well Engineering Partners’s Salt Solution Mining Team visited the Neuhof-Ellers underground potash mine of K+S in Germany. It was a great experience to be able to walk, and physically see the different salt types (e.g. Carnaliet, Halite) with the different other layers (clay, anhydrite). We stand normally high above the salt layers ranging from a […]
