Geothermal: Shallow Geothermal Feasibility Study
Project Description
Well Engineering Partners (WEP) contributed to WarmingUp project with a feasibility study to shallow geothermal doublets which could potentially be a feasible source of heat. WarmingUp is an initiative focused on developing and implementing advanced heating concepts to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. The feasibility study analyses the technical, economic, and environmental viability of the proposed concept design, considering various scenarios and stakeholder inputs. Well designs including the upper and lower completions have been prepared to target the Brussels sands at a depth between 570m and 1100m. Investigated well trajectories ranged from vertical, inclined to horizontal. Various relevant Dutch and international offset wells have been studied to demonstrate the drilling feasibility and that track record in the Netherlands exists. Construction costs, operational costs and abandonment costs have been estimated. TNO dynamically modelled the reservoir to calculate the productivity and (nett) produced energy for the various configurations for a 20-year period. The doublets estimated Net Present Value per well configuration was used identify the most economical approach.
Based on the analysis of all concepts, a concept with horizontal well arrangement appears to be economically the most advantageous. Two vertical wells connected with a surface connection to close the formation brine loop is economical the least attractive.
The report recommends moving forward with demonstration projects, further technical optimization, and policy support to realise the full potential of Shallow Geothermal Doublets. For stakeholders and communities interested in sustainable heating solutions, the report project represents a forward-thinking approach that could set new standards in energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.
